Notes in Resonance - **A Critical Beginning**: When discussing the self and "barriers to self-actualization" with the young and curious, the question arises: What is self-actualization if not the self? In practical terms, how are we so comfortable claiming to surpass our hubris while proclaiming the desire and perhaps even the achievement of a higher self? Is this not a self-affirming hypocritical loop? The answer is simple. Self-actualization is not a goal or a state, but a process. Knowledge its self is not power, rather it is the constraints which direct it. The flow of power, like a torrent of water must remain constant, but directed correctly, as Bernoulli’s equation describes, that power can increase tenfold. The structure of power is of utmost importance, if it’s sophisticated enough, even water can be used for calculations, which can be used for predictions, which can be used for intelligence. However, should that flow of power stop, even the most sophisticated of structures, the most knowledgeable of humans, become useless. This is all to say, in the presence of a waterfall, of potential energy, of fate itself, do not mistake your knowledge for power. You still must flow. Take action. - **On Self Assertion & Identity** The relationship between a person's self perceived intellect and their identity, perhaps has more to do with the defensive nature of certain traumas, than actual cognitive ability. Meaning, those who have recognized patterns which inflict the feelings of isolation, adopt a identity of "smarter than average" as an attempt to reconcile the perceived unjust and uncomfortable experiences they have endured. This identity works in a defensive manner, by changing the victim's perception of the perpetrators to either malevolent or ignorant, realities which are easier to reconcile. However, if we want to be exact, the process of abuse, specifically in adolescents either forces them to break or adapt. If intelligence is defined as the rate of adaption to new circumstances, than these children are correct in their assumptions of "better than average." What is so often missed by their self evaluation, is that this forced adaptation into maturity is the robbing of childhood and innocence, a theft which often manifests in defensive manners, the kind which hinders future growth. The self is ultimately an act of interpretation, interpretation's made up of the interpretation of previous events and narratives, a 4 dimensional soup. That is to say, what we call the self is both innate and malleable to the point that the classification loses meaning. So, I believe anyone who claims something about their self, usually is simply not confidant enough in their actual ability to portray that which they claim. Because if you're truly uncomfortable, you can't even sleep. What I often hear from people and see from people is that they get very motivated for short periods of time. They'll be very motivated to change their life for three hours, and then they'll just go back to playing video games. And they're actually not unhappy with their life. They're fine to play video games and eat beans on toast and sit around in a small little apartment. They only become unhappy for a few hours now and again. That's when they talk about how motivated they are. That's when they talk about how hard they want to try. But in general, they're actually perfectly fine with their life, meaning they wish to be there. If they wished to be anywhere else, they wouldn't be doing what they're doing. Exponential curves are the key to wealth generation. Your rate of learning should always be high. - **Have almost too much self-belief:** Self-belief is immensely powerful. The most successful people I know believe in themselves almost to the point of delusion. Cultivate this early. As you get more data points that your judgment is good and you can consistently deliver results, trust yourself more. - **Focus:** Focus is a force multiplier on work. Almost everyone I've ever met would be well-served by spending more time thinking about what to focus on. It is much more important to work on the right thing than it is to work many hours. Most people waste most of their time on stuff that doesn't matter. Once you have figured out what to do, be unstoppable about getting your small handful of priorities accomplished quickly. I have yet to meet a slow-moving person who is very successful. - **Work hard:** You can get to about the 90th percentile in your field by working either smart or hard, which is still a great accomplishment. But getting to the 99th percentile requires both— you will be competing with other very talented people who will have great ideas and be willing to work a lot. - **Be hard to compete with:** Most people understand that companies are more valuable if they are difficult to compete with. This is important, and obviously true. But this holds true for you as an individual as well. If what you do can be done by someone else, it eventually will be, and for less money. - Which would you choose? A world with pyramids?
